Opelika High School Alunmi Association
Mission statement: To help provide financial and administrative support to
Opelika High School in the areas of special projects, public relations, scholarships and awards and to keep the membership
advised of activities of Opelika High School, the Alumni Association and the members of the Alumni Association through periodic
publications.
Current Officers: Carlton Hunley, President; Doug Horn, Vice President, Scholarships; Boyd Hodge, Vice President, Membership; Albert Killian, Vice President, Special Projects;
Jane Worthington, Vice President, Public Information, Michael Guy, Treasurer
History: In the year 1999, Coach Albert Killian and
Margaret Askew were very instrumental in organizing the Alumni Association. They
met with the OHS Principal, who at the time was Don Roberts. He was very supportive
and with his approval they moved ahead. The first newsletters were one page black
and white publications and were mailed to a small group of members. Over the
past eight years, the organization has grown to over 2,000 members.
Beginning in 1999 with donations from members the first two $500.00 scholarships were awarded. In 2000 three $500.00 scholarships were awarded and beginning with the Class of 2001 the amount was increased
to two $1,000.00 awards. Since 1999 $14,500.00 has been awarded to deserving
Opelika High students. The Scholarship Committee at OHS makes the selection based on need and potential,
and the support for these scholarships is totally dependent upon funds from annual dues.
The generous support of members provides for the Colonel Robert Howard and the Colonel Jim Voss scholarships each year. Anyone interested in contributing may send a $10.00 donation each year or you may
become a lifetime member by making a single donation of $100.00. All donations
are greatly appreciated!
Support the OHSAA and annual newsletter: Each year when classes meet
for reunions, we ask that the reunion committees forward the updated classmate lists to the OHSAA Membership Vice President
so that we can add their names to our newsletter mail out list. The newsletters
will include a form and envelope for donations and membership each year. If you
did not receive the ALUMNI NEWSLETTER this year, you can mail your contribution to OHSAA, P.O. Box 1636,
Opelika, Al 36803. After the mail out for this year (2006), we received a donation from a member of the Clift High School (OHS) “Class of 1931”. Even though this lady did not receive a newsletter her sister did. While going through her sister’s papers she found the newsletter and form and mailed a donation. What a great surprise this turned out to be as we contacted her and heard her story
from all those years ago. You will be able to read about her in the next newsletter. If any of you have a story to tell, please let us hear from you. Thanks to everyone for your participation.
