OPELIKA PRIVATE SCHOOLS
I was not sure where to put the following images, supplied by David Pope.  They are from Opelika and Pepperell and I wanted to keep them together.  So here they are. All comments are by David Pope.

7th grade class - Clift High School - 1952

Comments by David Pope who supplied the above image

I am attaching a picture of the 7th grade class of 1952, Homeroom teacher: R. M. Conner.but was only at Opelika for 7th, 8th & half of 9th. Graduated Beauregard in 1957.

1st - 6th grade at Pepperell  Village School. Before that at the Pepperell Village Kindergarten.

Maybe some of the Opelika folks can identify the individuals. I am in the back row 2nd from right. Elizabeth Wooddy is in the front row 3rd from right.

The following names were submitted by Jane Worthington:

Back row: 3rd from left - Wilber Standridge; 5th from left - Lamar Lankford

middle row: 3rd from left - K.P. Hayes;  6th from left – Gerald Ray

Front row:  left-Maxine Quinton; 4th from left Kay Ann Carthon; 5th from left - Nicky Bell

Mr. R. M. Conner is at the right. Mr. Conner left Opelika to coach at Beauregard in 1953. My wife was in his homeroom in Beauregard 8th grade.

My Report Card is from Opelika City Schools and R. M. Conner is Home Room Teacher, Mrs. Lois B. Gholston was the Principal.

Pepperell Community also had a 7th grade class and I knew most of the people in that class but we moved to Beauregard area for a couple of years and I went to Opelika to play in the Band and then football for the 8th/9th grade year.I transferred to Beauregard after Christmas break and played basketball there 4 years.

Above image is my mom (Mamye Lois Pope) and a Victory Garden picture and caption. Note it was from Henry Stern.

You can see the old house, coal shed and smoke stack. We lived on the corner, right across from the baseball field behind Pepperell School.

Pepperell Girls 1936 Basketball Team
girlsbasketballteam1936.jpg

Left to Right:
Dora Jolly, Gladys Golden, Helen Van Patten, Sally Truitt,  Una Van Patten, Mamye Golden, Annie Ruth Golden. Coach in Background: Mr. N. O. Smith Ball Boy: Wally Beck (son of Mr. Beck, Electrical Shop Supervisor)

My mother was Mamye Lois Golden Pope, (she married Clarence Earl  "Bill" Pope, pitcher for the Pepperell Dragons Baseball Team.)  Her sister was Gladys Lucille Golden, (she married Harold Yancey, forward on the Pepperell Boy's Basketball Team.)

John Abner Stewart played on the Pepperell Boy's Basketball Team and  married another sister, Nelle Madge Golden. All were recruited to work at Pepperell to play for the athletic teams.

Update of the above images by Skip Lanier

The picture with the "coach" with the girls basketball team has the coach as N. O. Smith.  It should be Mr. Beck, Wally's Dad.  The Mr. Smith was actually the Grammer School Principal, and his name was Smyth, and was Oliver's Dad.
The same picture shows Dora Jolly; The Van Patten without a first I believe is Una who married Chester Plott.

Pepperell Girls Basketball Team c. 1938
1938pepperellgirlsbasketball.jpg

I believe this is the 1938 team. The girls are older and my mom's last year was 1938. I was born 1939 and put and end to that. Daddy played another couple of years with the Pepperell Dragons but the only team pictures I have are at the end of the year through 1940. He was a knuckleball pitcher and a good hitter. He was moved up to a higher division at the end of baseball season and Pepperell would give him a leave of absence.

I don't know all of the girls in the picture but will recognize several.

From Left to Right:
1- Dora Jolly or Sally Truitt (I think Dora, wife of Hudson Jolly-Baseball team))

2- Mamye Pope (Was Golden, Married Bill Pope-Baseball team))

3- Gladys Yancey (Was Golden, married Harold Yancey-Basketball team)

4- ??????
5- Una Mae Van Patten (Didn't marry until 1940-Chester Lewis Plott)

6- ??????

7- Helen Van Patten (Didn't marry until 1950-Lawrence O. Stroud)

Received from Skip Lanier:
The first on the left is Annie Ruth Young, I think.
