Recent news from Jean Mitchell is that a meeting was conducted last week of several classmates in Opelika to discuss the 55th Class reunion.  Suggestions were made, places to hold the dinner was discussed, but no final decisions were made.  They talked about having the reunion either in August (Hot) or September (better).  There will be another meeting on March 6, 2007 to share the information collected by the participants of the last meeting.  If you have any suggestions that you would like them to know about, please email me using the link CONTACT WEBMASTER and I will pass it on to the people involved.  Any suggestions must arrive prior to the next meeting of March 6.

Thursday - August 4, 2005

I received the following information from Jean Mitchell a couple of days ago.

Dear Class Members:

We held a class reunion meeting , Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 7:00 P.M.

We  discussed a joint class reunion of the graduating classes of 1951 and 1953.  I had contacted the Chairperson of 1953, Nancy (Booth) Killian and

they had a brunch meeting and discussed the joint reunion and voted against joint unions.  She stated that it was not anything against us.   She also stated that they had theirs set up and it was running smoothly and that was the way that they wanted to keep it.

There was a good discussion to having joint reunions and we decided to keep having our own reunions every two (2) years.  We planned to have our class reunion in May,2007 this time.  No confirmed date was set at this time.  The group decided to meet again in approximately six (6) months before May 2007 or before, to get everything organized for the confirmed date and location.  We also decided to have all events (Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday) to be a"sit down"affair.  We also discussed, if anyone wishing to invite anyone from the class above or below, that this is acceptable, but you would be responsible

to pay for them.

Elmer Mitchell was confirmed to remain as Chairperson.

Bobby Huling was in charge of the locations. (places have been discussed)

Jean Mitchell is in charge of communications.

Those in attendance were as following:  Paul Parks, Lamar and Donna Jones, Julia and Bobby Huling, Bill Hilyer, Mollie and Mack Henderson, and Jean and Elmer Mitchell.

If there are any changes in your address, telephone number, e-mails, sickness and etc., please let us know right away where we can notify the

classmembers by e-mail or telephone (who do not have computers).

We will keep you all informed as the time calls for other meetings.

Best regards.

Elmer Mitchell

UPDATE - JUNE 12, 2004

Elmer Mitchell has made reservations for June 18, 2005 for the Springvilla Park Lodge from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  It is already confirmed and other plans will follow as it gets closer to the first of the year 2005.  Mark your calendar for that weekend ! Keep the whole weekend open.

UPDATE MAY 15, 2004

The following letter was received from Jean Mitchell yesterday.

=========================================

Dear Classmates:

It has been said by all who attended our last reunion, that everyone had a very enjoyable evening.  I think the consensus was let’s do it again and soon.  With this in mind, it has been proposed that we have one very two (2) years.  Let’s do it!

But first, on a sad note, we all mourn Margaret’s passing, She was loved by all and we will miss her.  We also lost Ray Tucker the last of March.  We had just found out he was back in Opelika but very ill.  We have now lost thirteen (13) class members, so let’s get together more often.

There were several, at the last reunion, that offered financial assistance.  I would at this time, ask financial help from all who feel they can afford it.  If  you can not, I will understand and that will be the end of my request.  We will put this money in a bank account and use it for up front costs of all reunions.  At this time, we do not have but forty-four dollars ($44) and most of  it will be used for this mailing.  I hope we can get at least five hundred dollars ($500) for this account.

We are proposing a three (3) day event - Friday night - all day Saturday- Sunday morning buffet breakfast.

On Saturday, however; the all day event from 10 AM til 6 PM will be at Springvilla.  They have a new Lodge and it is fantastic.  It has AC and a small kitchen, etc.  This way, we can all sit, stand, walk around the ground and just visit with one another.  We can have a business meeting and have some fun, as well. Should we do this at Springvilla, we have to make reservations a year in advance.

Everyone who has a computer, please send your comments to:

jeanmitchell@highstream.net

Should you wish to send a check (any amount) mail to:

Elmer Mitchell, 2115 Henderson Drive, Opelika, AL 36801

Sincerely,

P.S.  Thank you and we shall let you hear regarding the

 dates, times and complete itineraries.

UPDATE OCTOBER 2003

I received a comment from another class member who attended a combined reunion, and didn’t think it was very enjoyable.  There were too many people and mingling was too spread out.  It was not comfortable to go over and try to join another group, especially if you didn’t really know them that well.  The majority probably doesn’t have that much in common with another class.

It was also a function that did not cater well to moving about and mingling.  People got stuck at their own table and didn’t get up and move about.  It was held at night and at a location that was not well lighted, and it was difficult to recognize anybody.

We had a very nice function at another reunion one year at the Brownfield House (where Clift High used to sit).  There were several individual long tables set up, and it was catered.   Another class had tables down the center holding all the food.  The tables were nicely decorated in red and black, with red and black balloons around.   There was a table set up for memorabilia that people brought to share.  People could get up and move about and it was just right for mingling and visiting.

Nancy Henderson-Mcleod and Minnie Lou (Doe) Golden-Ellis have both indicated to me that they prefer not to have a reunion combined with another class.

Mary Nell (Jordan) Bohler sent the following comment:

With regard to our next class reunion, it really
doesn't matter to me whether or not we combine
with the class of '53, but I know first hand that
they really do a great job in planning their reunions and that they usually last two or three days.  They
also have frequent reunions.  I go to church with
Betty (Leonard) Scroggins, and she always fills me
in on their activities.  It is a really big affair, and I
doubt they could handle the additional people from
our class.  Just thought I would pass this on.
Take care.
Mary (Jordan) Bohler

NEXT REUNION 2005

There has been a great deal of discussion on the timing of the next reunion. Most of the discussion has only involved a few class members. It would be nice if we could have more classmates involved in these discussions. Since we are all on the other side of the half century mark (sound better than our actual age), the general consensus of opinion is that we have a reunion every other year, i.e.: 2005, 2007, etc. etc. All involved agree that this is a very good idea.

Some of the recommendations are:

Two or three days of reunion activities.

1.  An outdoor BBQ on the first day (weather permitting).

2.  An evening Dinner on the second day.

3.  A farewell Breakfast on the third day.

4.  An hour with no organized activities scheduled prior to dinner. Maybe a cocktail hour. This would give everyone sufficient time to socialize. That was the biggest complaint I heard about the 2003 reunion. Not enough time to talk to everyone.

Or any combination of the above.

Note:  Having activities scheduled over a two or three day period will give everyone a chance to attend at least one of the activities.

Keep in mind that time seems to fly these days.  Before you know it, we will be getting ready to attend the next reunion.  As these things do not happen in a vacuum, you need to give your ideas to Elmer Mitchell.  Those of you that live in the Opelika area are encouraged to offer your assistance.  I, of course, will publish all the information on our website, and take the responsibility of keeping an up-to-date class roster. Those of you online and not in the Opelika area, are encouraged to contact and update classmates that are offline and live in your general area.

Please send me any new suggestion.
